Who was Aaron Bushnell?
Aaron Bushnell, was an active-duty member of the US Air Force, who died on Sunday 25th February 2024 after setting himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC, in an act of protest against the genocide in Gaza.
Several times he shouted ‘FREE PALESTINE’ with huge courage while still standing for 47 seconds while suffering unimaginable pain. These were his last words.
“I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest, but compared to what people are experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonisers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal. Free Palestine”. He said this in a video he made while walking in front of the Israeli embassy in Washington, DC.
Aaron Bushnell self immolates outside Israeli Embassy video
Bushnell, 25, was dressed in full military attire as he used a lighter to set himself on fire after dousing himself in liquid. He recorded the entire incident on Twitch, a popular streaming platform, which later removed the video.
A Facebook post credited to Aaron was widely shared on Twitter on Monday, with the following content: “Many of us like to ask ourselves, ‘What would I do if I was alive during slavery? Or the Jim Crow South? Or apartheid? What would I do if my country was committing genocide?’ The answer is, you’re doing it. Right now.”
Aaron Bushnell lived in San Antonio, Texas, and was pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in software engineering. His ultimate sacrifice must never be forgotten and must bear the fruit of freedom.
